Thanks to all of you who joined us in our chatroom during this holiday
season. Unlike last year, all computer chatrooms were bustling with
activity these past two weeks, in spite of the holidays. Most of the
night we placed 4th; we closed at midnight.
WHO WAS THERE
KH MEMBERS - Lina, Vivienne, Lawrence, Al, Dan, Rob (kern), Rich,
Tom (tjefm), N3, Photolady.
VISITORS WHO PARTICIPATED - Light_for_Jesus, chunkypuppy43,
Wildred5273. (We had quite a few visitors who stayed, listened, but did not
participate. Many were still there at the end of the session.)
COMPUTER DISCUSSIONS
XP - Lawrence thinks XP is a PIA because it has presented many problems
whenever he has loaded it! He didn't get a chance to explain. Perhaps he's
too spoiled by and loyal to Linux?
LINUX - Puppy 2.13 coming out. Rich doing better with his Linux Puppy.
THE RED X
Al's friend uses XP Home and IE-7, can't see two icons, big red X instead
of graphic or url, has run scans. Tried restoring default, still red X.
Sounds like a setting in Java. A setting in Java will cause red X problem in
IE. Has she tried upgrading Java? Check Add/Remove Programs for Java
version.
Some changes were recommended in the "Proxies" tab. Check "use browser
settings." Changing settings will affect how IE functions. There were also
additional setting changes such as check "use HTTP 1.1" (I could not keep
up with them, sorry!).
To get rid of IE-7, run the Windows updates again in CUSTOM, remove check
mark for IE 7, and select to hide it.
CONGRATULATIONS N3!
N3 replaced his Dell 4550 with a new Dell E520, 2 duo core, 160 HD, 2G
ram, with a 19-inch LCD monitor......enjoy it in good health!
The guys checked the specs of N3's computer and engaged in a robust
discussion, rating each component. (When I go to buy another computer,
I will again be sure to first run the specs by them. They were a godsend when I
bought mine 3 years ago.)
Ooooops! When N3 went to dispose of his old Dell 4550, he opened it up and
noticed a gouge on the hard-drive disk ... it may have been repairable! But, hey,
N3, you deserve a new computer and monitor! No regrets. Enjoy!
GATEWAY COMPUTER - NOW HE TELLS ME!
Rich rebuilding a 2-year-old Gateway. You have to see it to believe it. I
could not keep up with all the negative things Rich had to say about the
computer parts Gateway put in this computer.... unfortunately, my brother
just bought a Gateway. ..
Rich solved its sound card problem by going to www.creative.com, putting
in the model number, and downloading the correct driver.
COMPUTERS FROM CHINA
Australia has mainly re-branded computers from China.
MONITORS
We discussed monitors at length again and compared resolution settings.
This subject may come up often because of the current switch from
CRT to LCD monitors.
Rob prefers matte screens, shiny, have better viewing angle and crisper
picture, especially for video, movies, and the like.
Tom has shiny backlit screen on his Toshiba satellite.
LAPTOPS - Rob suggested Al look at HP's nice "business-class"
model for around $600, NX6325, when he replaces his ancient computer.
VISTA - When the Bullguard AV updates, it gives indications of
current problems and said Vista is a turkey shoot for hackers!
AVG - Lawrence maintains AVG is often corrupted with viral material.
DIAL-UP....What's that?
We tried to help visitor chunkypuppy43 do an online install of
dial-up on an old W98 computer. We suggested Juno, which provides
10 free hours a month, www.juno.com. It would not take, even
though W98 was a minimum requirement. .. :frown:
COMPUTER LINGO
Hot swap means inserting components when power is on, changing
a part in the computer without turning it off. (To me it sounded more like
illegally replacing an expensive part with an cheaper, inferior one.)
brb can mean be right back or bathroom break (which some further
describe with a color....really, nothing or a number would suffice! Yuk!)
Moofed is an old modem term for MOdem OFfline.
NON-COMPUTER DISCUSSIONS
LANGUAGE PITFALLS
In Australia, a switched-on chick signifies a clever female......for a brief
moment I thought Lawrence was coming on to me .. ;)
Did you hear about the American who thought he was saying he was embarrassed
in Spanish? Embarazada in Spanish means pregnant!
QUALITY OF CHINESE GOODS - Lawrence pleased with China-made
equipment for his swimming pool. Re-branded Chinese computer seems
okay, too.
THE DEMISE OF OBSCENE PHONE CALLS - probably due
to Caller ID?
PRICE OF CIGARETTES :smokin: - Really varies by state. Sooo glad
I quit smoking! Photolady and Lawrence hoping to quit.....good luck!
Have a Happy New Year. May the next year be the first of the best
years of your life. Stay safe.
