I have a client who wants to buy a Windows machine, but has years of Mac files, mostly in Word (Appleworks). She has Os10 on her current Mac.
What is the easiest way for me to convert those files to Ms Word, or anything else in Windows for that matter?
I have actually looked at the idea of scanning the most important ones into Acrobat, and then saving them as ms Word as almost the easiest.

You're giving conflicting info. Word is a MS product. AppleWorks is an Apple product. If the files on the Mac were created in MS Word, they will open in Word for Windows and probably Wordpad. What's may be missing is the .doc extension. Add the extension and see if it opens.

If the files are indeed AppleWorks, there may be a converter to open in Word for Windows. If not, open them in AppleWorks and Save As either Word or rtf format. Don't forget to add extensions if the Mac doesn't add them automatically.

Yes Tony they are Appleworks files. Saved to Ms Word they open on the Mac but as jibberish looking nothing like the original.
I don't see either rtf or .doc added to the file though when I save them.

In older systems, it won't add the extension. You have to do it manually after you save it in the proper format.

How many files are we talking about here? Why not send me a couple of samples so we're on the same page. You may my email.

This sounds very similar to Works Word Processing of yesterday.

You could "save" a document with a Save As to Word - but VERY rarely did the document later open up in any version of Word.

I think that is why M$ stopped supplying WPS in their Works Suite and just went to adding Word.

Rich,

I have transfer many a file over the years from Mac to PC, including from AppleWorks 1.0 circa 1980s on 5-1/4" Apple ProDos disks.

But you said you want the EASIEST ...

1) Depending on the exact version of Apple Works, I have had fairly good success with Conversions Plus by DataViz

Here are two reviews I wrote:

2) If you are happy with PDF, why scan? With OSX, just print As PDF with Acrobat 7/8 on the Mac.

However, does your client want editable text? Are you saying that Word will open a PDF, edit it and let you save as a DOC.

No need for Acrobat on Mac OS-X. Mac OS-X has print to pdf built in.

Yes Fred we want it exact and editable as these are music camp brochures created in Appleworks that may have to be updated from time to time.

I didn't know that. I have to check the animal version of my OSX on my Mac Mini. I think it is Tiger.
