Well, I was prepping a system this morning and was astonished to find that IE 7 was NOT in the critical or optional updates for a new system update of XP Pro.
I scoured the updates and it just wasn't there! A nice surprise since I have been hiding it from the new installs until everyone NEEDS it for internet access.
The strange thing is that it WAS there yesterday when I was prepping another system.
Busy week - have 3 workstations and 3 Domain servers to install by end of week.
I have been hiding it from the new installs until everyone NEEDS it for internet access.
Me too.
So far, not one of my customers likes IE7. Most are pissed off that they fired up there computer one day to find out there browser was different.
I've also noticed that IE7 is much slower to display pages than IE6. Probably because of the filters.

Same here with IE7.
One client was so ticked off, he insisted NOT having ANY further automatic updates and asked that I disable Security Center [Services].
Me too.

I found an blocking tool at http://www.snapfiles.com/get/ie7blockingtool.html that prevents the installation of IE7. Although I have since installed IE7 as my secondary browser to FF, it did prevent automatic installation.

Last time I checked IE7 was no longer a critical update which means it should not be coming in auto download.

It's still coming through as critical. (Critical for MS, not the end user).

Well now that is really odd because not on mine.

Hmmm.
I just finished a full recovery on an HP this morning, and have done 3 or 4 clean installs/repair installs in the last week. I then load SP2 from a cd and go to Windows Update. I click on Express, and IE7 will show in the list that contains about 50 critical updates (I uncheck it from there). Perhaps if I choose Custom it will show up as an optional.

Could be I always go in "custom".

I was also going to suggest Custom, as oppose to Express, and you can have Windows ignore the update.
From MS:
What’s the difference between Express and Custom?
When you check for updates, you have two options:
Express (recommended) finds all high-priority updates for your computer so you can install them with one click. This is the quickest and easiest way to keep your computer up to date.
Custom finds high-priority and optional updates. You need to review and select the updates you want to install, one by one.______________________________________________ _________________
After installing SP2 from cd, I choose Express. On either the first or second round of updates, the next set will be a list of about 50 "Critical Updates". 3/4 of the way down that critical list, will be "Internet Explorer 7". That's where I uncheck it and choose to ignore it in the future.
"Custom" takes too long as it looks for the critical updates as well as the optional updates. "Express" just displays the critical updates, and you can uncheck any entry from that list.
