Culver City (CA) - Some early Vista users and even experienced technical support personnel are experiencing installation problems with Microsoft's newest operating system. Geek Squad employees at local Best Buy stores are handing store customers a paper "Public Service Announcement", warning of long waits during the first boot-up times. Some customers have already damaged their hard drives by turning off their computers during the boot.
Geek Squad employees warned shoppers that computers could take up to 25 minutes to start up the first time after and install and to not mistake the delay for a crash ...

Is there any screen animation? Is there any % indicator when this is going on? Is there any blinking light on the drive?

No Fred it just seems to be hanging forever. I think that 25 minutes though is a bit of an exxageration though they could be talking about an Upgrade vs Full Install.

It HAS to be the upgrade install - the clean installs I have done on my bench drive alotment have all gone smoothly during the installation (now drivers is a completely different story  ). Just do a search on Rich's Vista drivers for SOUND drivers.

It did not happen to me that I noticed. I even installed it in VMWare which was slow, but not that slow. It does test your system during its initial use to give it a rating, but I never knew it could take that long.
