01/31/07 Wed Nite KH Computer Help Desk Chatroom Summary

We tied for 4th place for a while in computer chatrooms last night and closed
about 12:25 a.m.

To our friends overseas: The U.S. goes on Daylight Savings Time earlier
this year, on March 11. This may make our chatroom hours slightly less
inconvenient for you. We'd love to have you join us even for a short while.

Rob (kern), Vivienne, Tony, Pete, Billy, et al, we missed you! Vivienne's
commitments will preclude her joining us for a few weeks (she's okay), but we
hope to see the rest of you here next week. Billy, hope you made a bundle
working.

COMPUTER-RELATED DISCUSSIONS

LINUX
Rob Cohan and Lawrence (our resident Linux scholar) had an extended
discussion about Linux. Lawrence has Rob intrigued with Linux. Sorry,
I didn't know what they were talking about! ... :noidea:

Latest official release: Puppy version 2.13
http://www.puppylinux.org/user/viewpage.php?page_id=1

BTW, Tortanick, Lawrence truly respects the depth of your Linux
knowledge! :first:

VISTA
Lots of problems with drivers for Vista, lots of incompatibility with
software and hardware. Unfortunately for Microsoft, Vista may be the best
thing that could have happened to Linux! Hopefully M$ stockholders and
employees won't suffer.

Steve Gibson called Vista a security nightmare.

I reiterated my suggestion for computer manufacturers: -- to increase sales
of new Vista-installed computers, offer a free downgrade to XP! (Sorry,
John. I couldn't resist.)

AUTORUNS
Doug started cleaning something on the old machine with Autoruns and
deleted something. Major mess! Ended up as a restore from backup. And
again, thank God for Acronis!

JV16 BETA
Doug says it runs faster. The author, Jouni (aka our new member jv16),
was 17 when he wrote the original version... nice to have him on the
forums.

INTERNET EXPLORER
Although many detest IE-7, Pi really likes it! Different strokes for
different folks.

Visitor Im-Crocodile-NT wanted to know how to find out which version of
IE he was using. Answer: Open Internet Explorer and click Help | About IE.

DRIVER RELOADS ON STARTUP
pc411 had a problem with driver reloading all the time on startup. 2000
pro, has SP4, not all wp updates. Rich's advice: do all updates and do them
manually as you might find a different driver for that card at update site that
might fix it...the other thought is to look at bios updates to see if any
address sound-card issues. The last thing you could do is replace the sound
card, not many $ and Ess wasn't much good new 10 years ago.

RAID ON A PROLIANT SERVER
Jupiter Maximus sought someone with experience with RAID on a ProLiant
Server. Rob Cohan said there were good tutorials online.

CCNA - CISCO CERTIFIED NETWORK ASSOCIATE
No one could tell Visitor just_X anything about CCNA. The
CCNA exam is the qualifying exam available to candidates pursuing a
single-exam option for the Cisco Certified Network Associate CCNA
certification. I'll bet Pi (our brilliant resident student) could
have helped, but he had already left.

SHIPPING LCD MONITOR UNDER WARRANTY TO VENDOR
Vivienne finally received a box to return her monitor but was waiting for
a friend to come to town and try to fix it. Doug warned that failure to
return the monitor within X-number of days could void the warranty! I
assume this would apply to other hardware also.

TROUBLED LCD MONITOR?
Visitor Link357 had a monitor that turned green....and not from envy. We
advised him to jiggle all the monitor cables, then plug and replug them. If
that did not work, then try another monitor with the computer, then the
failing monitor on a different computer. (We did not discuss it, but I don't
think, as a final resort, you can give an LCD monitor a good whack like you
can a CRT.)

Lawrence estimates a new tube would cost about $20. If that did not resolve
the problem, then a related $60 item could be at fault.

With promotions for 17-19" LCD monitors for $69 to $99 after rebates,
it may make more sense to buy a new monitor. In fact, if you have a
working monitor, buy a spare at that price! If you buy online, Rich
recommends you avoid Tiger Direct -- they charge a fortune for shipping!

BUY MONITOR ONLINE OR IN STORE?
Some want to see how a monitor performs in the store before buying one.
Some have wives who would have a hissy fit if they had to wait a few days
for an online delivery. Others have experienced fast delivery from online
vendors and are enticed by the no-sales-tax and sometimes free-shipping
advantage.

Unfortunately, the url Rich gave us for a Hans-G LCD monitor deal has
expired. But keep checking if you need one. There will be more
promotions, and prices will be coming down.

CLEANING LCD MONITORS
Rob Cohan suggested using an old T-shirt and solution of 25% water, 75%
isopropyl alcohol (9x%), few drops of "Dawn", etc., for about 4oz. (BTW,
he said to use distilled water but typed water in the text box. Don't know if
that would make a difference.)

Doug: Spit! the universal solvent! 2/3 cat pee, one spit wad, one dirty
T-shirt. (What, no vodka, Doug?)

Using saliva is also great for cleaning your glasses. No, I don't think
that's where the phrase spit and polish came from. In the military we
used spit to help polish our boots ..... that's how I think the saying originated.

See our forum for an ongoing discussion on preferred methods to clean
LCD monitors:

NON-TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONS

ADDITION TO PHOTOLADY'S MENAGERIE
Meet Photolady's adorable new puppy, Tiny (whom Photolady calls T niny):
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5739

ASTHMA
Doug's 27-year-old son had a close call. Luckily Doug's paramedic skills
and the fact that he was home saved the day.

Lawrence knows a lot about asthma. Here's an old site he set up about 12
years ago: http://www.home.acenet.net.au/lagas/

Lawrence swears by cold showers for asthmatic attacks! The shock causes
involuntary breathing ...... It can take two years to get cat hairs out of a
house! ...... And those susceptible can break out in hives if they come near
a horse.

Until next week, bundle up and stay warm .. :grouphug:

Hi Lina

Thanks very much for the summary. I am sorry to have missed another very interesting session.

AUTORUNS
Doug started cleaning something on the old machine with Autoruns and
deleted something. Major mess! Ended up as a restore from backup. And
again, thank God for Acronis!

I downloaded Autoruns but didn't do anything as I just don't know enough yet!

SHIPPING LCD MONITOR UNDER WARRANTY TO VENDOR
Vivienne finally received a box to return her monitor but was waiting for
a friend to come to town and try to fix it.

I wish I had a friend who could fix monitors. :-) Lina, she is coming to visit us and I was going to give her the monitor to take back with her and thus save the shipping fee. Sorry I wasn't clear.

Doug warned that failure to
return the monitor within X-number of days could void the warranty!

Thanks for the warning! I called AOC to explain and they said not to worry. If the repair depot has a problem, they will email AOC and AOC will extend the time. The box was sent as a favour from the repair depot and therefore AOC did not even know about it.

With promotions for 17-19" LCD monitors for $69 to $99 after rebates,

Oh how I wish I could find deals like that here!!

BUY MONITOR ONLINE OR IN STORE?
Some have wives who would have a hissy fit if they had to wait a few days
for an online delivery.

LOL!!!! No impatient *guys* in this group!!! Ya, right! :-)

How very scary!! So glad Doug was home!

Lawrence knows a lot about asthma.

He knows a ton more than the doctors and the specialists. I have a friend with a very bad case and I was bowled over by the quality of advice Lawrence had for him.

Again, thanks Lina! I'm looking forward to joining you again soon!

Tortanick would like: Details please

Rob Cohan made that statement. I emailed him and asked him to please
elaborate here. He's a carryover member from our old forum. Although
Rob tries to join us in our chatroom as often as possible, I don't think he
checks in here with regularity (busy, busy man!). That's a shame, because
he has a lot to offer.

Tortanick,

May as well hear it from the horse's mouth:

Podcast of Steve Gibson (and Leo Laporte) on the subject at:

A couple more monitor deals....don't hesitate with these or they will be gone.
This is 17" but also $99 with $13.75 freight which looks good:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2606273&Sku=N52-1732
This one at $129 is actually a major brand too: same $13.75 freight

Rich, unless I'm reading it incorrectly, the second one at $129 has free
shipping? If so, the major brand is not that much more expensive!!

Rich, I would not be surprised if shipping charge for the major brand $129
17-inch LCD monitor was dropped after your post.

If someone finds $129 with no shipping still too costly, I'd check the $99
offer from time to time to see if they drop the shipping charge on that one
too .... rebate offer good on both models until 2/28.

$99.99 plus $13.75 shipping

$129.99 free shipping

.....unless you come up with another like that recent $69 giveaway! :)

Visitor Link357 had a monitor that turned green
Oh, I thought it didn't work. I'm guessing that the pin in the cable for red was bent or not fully in.

ASTHMA
Doug's 27-year-old son had a close call. Luckily Doug's paramedic skills
and the fact that he was home saved the day.
Good thing Doug was home... I have something with similar effects as asthma: my vocal cords at times partially close and restrict breathing, but is less dangerous (and often misdiangosed) than asthma. It isn't too bad any more except once when I had the flu and collapsed since I woke up, coughed and couldn't breathe in. Now I can run a mile or more without problems when healthy.

I'll bet Pi (our brilliant resident student) could have helped, but he had already left.
I don't know too much about Cisco's certifications since I plan on waiting until I have more experience with Cisco products. And, there are sharper tools in the shed (ex. Stephen Hawking with an IQ of over 200!). ;)

I'd guess that distilled water would be much better. Pure water does not conduct electricity much at all. In contrast, "regular" water has many dissolved ions that conduct electricity. Distilled water has those ions boiled away, but still can form ions, but is significantly less conductive as regular water.
