Good Afternoon All, well I received a CD with Knoppix 5.1 on this morning, the live CD version.
This is pure magic, I let the machine boot on it and all items were auto-detected and no keys needed pressing whatsoever!
Nothing was needed to be entered and magically there is a desktop with all the items ready to go!!!
How is this possible?
I thought it must be a fluke so I tried it on another machine, again it booted with no hands to a desktop.
How does it know what kind of mouse and keyboard I am using??
It picked all the hardware on both occasions easier than a snotty nose!!!

Of course this is a live CD but I imagine it can be installed to the hard drive without too much problem.

This has got to be sheer marvellous stuff, I must load it onto something containing XP to see how well it functions with NTFS files.

I am impressed, Tortanic, you must try this!! KDE and all!!!

What a wonderful toy!!! Open Office, gimp, everything all the cream stuff!!!

Cheers, Lawrence.

Its fast because the Linux kernel is compressed, and contains a small bit, which will decompress it. Immediately after the first step begins the decompression and the loading of the kernel.

If the kernel detects that your graphics card supports more complex text modes, Linux allows the usage of them - this can be specified or during the recompilation of the kernel.

The kernel verifies hardware configuration (floppy drive, hard disk, network adapters, etc) and configures the drivers for the system. During this operation, several informative messages are shown.

The kernel tries to mount the file system and the system files. The location of system files is configurable during recompilation, The file system type is automatically detected. The most used file systems on Linux are ext2 and ext3. If the mount fails, a so-called kernel panic will occur, and the system will "freeze".
System files are usually mounted in read-only mode, to permit a verification of them during the mount. This verification isn't indicated if the files were mounted in read-write mode.

Hope you know why it does start so fast.

Good Evening Redapple, yes the last time I ran Knoppix was probably a couple of years ago and Tortanick mentioned Debian "Etch" so I downloaded what I thought was "Etch" but it was "Sarge" (stable) so that was to be another project next month. Etch remains "testing"!

On my doorstep this morning was Knoppix 5.1.1 and it runs "Etch" so I was quite happy.
I have run it on four machines now without problem but one machine did have an "out of range" problem with a "Tevion" Aldi Monitor. It is identifying the monitor as a HP of some model which is obviously incorrect.
I normally run puppy Linux but I had not previously seen a load that required no user input, certainly an interesting distro.
Thanks for your comments.
Cheers, qldit.

So many people say Linux is difficult to load, this Knoppix certainly isn't!!

Knoppix is a variant of Linux, its a modified debian that boots from the CD, rather than just installs. Knoppix is famous for its legendary hardware support (that I think has now spread to other most distros, yay to Open Source) and being the first to run an entire OS from the CD, that I know has spread around to lots of other distros.

Of course being based on Debian Knoppix is a great all round systen, and because unlike most Live CDs that are designed as a pre-install test, Knoppix is designed to be run from a CD instead of being installed so its comes with lots of software, and makes a very good recovery CD. Knoppix is still considered one of the Best Live CDs.

Good Morning BlackMirror, here is a site with the download as an ISO file, well worth a look.

Knoppix is nice for troubleshooting computers as well as showing people what Linux can be like. It also comes with QTParted, a free partitioning program.

Thanks for the info, I'll download the new version soon.
