Customer has replaced her old Dell with a new machine. She wants her old Dell cleaned so she can give it away. It originally came with and she upgraded to XP Home.

I fdisk'd, reformatted, loaded ME, the upgraded to XP on the machine. Loaded all the drivers (I thought) from the Dell disks. Did all the Windows updates.\

Device Manager still showing an unsupported device and I can't figure out what it is. Everything seems to be working.

How can I determine what this unsupported device is? Do I have to run AIDA or Belarc and compare the report to what I see in Dev Mgr?

If the device is on the mobo, then the chipset drivers should solve it. Dell may or may not have the chipset drivers available. If not, check the board number, or use Aida or everest to identify the board and load the chipset software.

If not on the mobo, it has to be a pci card. It's often a dial up modem (although many dial up modems will show as "PCI Communication Device"). Compare the add in cards to what Device Manager shows as being installed.

Did the chipset update. Installed the modem. Haven't tried everest.

Tony,

It is probably the SMB that is giving the unknown device error.

It isn't that important - but Seth has it right. A motherboard driver hasn't been configured (and don't bother looking because it SHOULD be a module of the motherboard .inf file).
