Customer has replaced her old Dell with a new machine. She wants her old Dell cleaned so she can give it away. It originally came with ME and she upgraded to XP Home.
I fdisk'd, reformatted, loaded ME, the upgraded to XP on the machine, all the Windows updates and then installed the supplied applications.
Now I'm getting 'Device or applications disabled' on startup. This shows up above the notification area. It looks like CD Creator 4 loaded cdralw2k.sys and cdr4_2k.sys. These are the drivers in question and they show up as disabled in Device Manager/CD Drives/Drivers. I removed CD Creator 4 and even used JV16 to remove it and clean registry.
I guess the problem arose because I loaded CD Creator 4 after upgrading to XP. That's the only thing i can think of that is different from how this machine was originally built.
I've been unable to get rid of the message or to remove the drivers. Doing a driver update doesn't find newer drivers. I'm ready to start over - load ME, then upgrade to XP but not install CD Creator,
