:welcome: to our forum, sugababe. Sorry your problem could not be
resolved during our KH chatroom session last night. Let's review what
we talked about.

You're not sure of your computer's age, it's a Compaq Presario MV 500
with ME operating system. You told us that the computer's sound won't
work, the coloring is like graphic, you cannot see the pictures--it's like a
grid, you can barely see the links. The sound and everything worked before
you shut it off because you were moving.

Sugababe, you may first want to try wiggling the cables coming from the
monitor. If no difference, then disconnect and reconnect all monitor
cables. If no improvement, then try connecting the computer to a different
monitor, or your monitor to a different computer to determine if a
defective monitor is a problem! Perhaps you can borrow a monitor?

A computer with ME has be about five years old and may not be worth
fixing. We speculated that when you moved, it could have dislodged
something, that your video card or monitor could be bad, or the audio
drivers may have become corrupted and need to be re-installed (it may be
the same with your video driver too). If it has onboard video, meaning the
video card is built into the motherboard and you don't have an AGP slot, the
only thing you could do now is get a new computer.

You could try going to www.hp.com, and click on Support. You
will be directed to a screen that asks for your hp/compaq model (which you
will find on the back of your computer). Then it will ask for your operating
system and will guide you to a page that will list the video, audio, etc,
drivers. You can download them (rename them so you will know the audio,
video, network driver, etc) to your hard drive so you have them for the
future. Then they will "extract" and start loading the driver for your
hardware. You will probably have to reboot after each install-- that is
another reason for downloading all of them before you start the install.
That should fix the audio and video for you.

Soooo, if I have got it right, that summarizes what we talked about in the
chatroom. Let's see what our other members think. They may want to
correct, confirm, or add to that summary. Hopefully we can help you
solve the problem or help you decide if your only alternative is to buy
another computer.

Sugababe, we encourage and appreciate all suggestions and comments
about our forum. Please post them in the Feedback forum for
the immediate attention of our Administrator and Super Moderators.

We look forward to your joining us again next week in our Wednesday
Night KH Computer Help Desk Paltalk chatroom, from 9 pm EST until
12 am.

There you can receive or give one-on-one, hands-on help for computer
problems, alert us or learn about new developments in computers and
software. Computer subjects get first priority. If there is a lull, then humor
finance, and whatever can be discussed intermittently. We try not to talk
about politics or religion-- there's enough disagreement about antivirus
scanners, F-8 and System Restore, motherboards, and Linux vs Vista .. :)

Again, welcome aboard, sugababe! .. :yo:

Sugababe,
Welcome to KH!

I'm not sure what to make of the 'grid' problem, but it sounds like the 'color quality' setting may have changed to a very low setting. try this- Right click on your desktop and click display 'properties' from the menu, then click settings tab, make sure at least 16-bit is selected in the 'color quality' drop down list, apply, ok. Post results.

I would suggest opening the case and reseating all cables, plugs and then pci cards as something surely shook loose during move,

Thank you, Jamie, for the feedback! Well, at least you know you left
no stone unturned before you gave up and discarded the computer!

Congratulations on your new computer! Enjoy it in good health! .. :D

Just curious, Jamie--did you get a laptop or desktop? XP or Vista?

We hope you have that new computer wisely and adequately protected
against malware. You can post any questions and/or find suggestions
through Search here....or ask about it in our chatroom. .. ;)

Good luck,

Lina
