TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONS

GRIDDY PICTURES AND NO AUDIO
New member sugababe posted a computer problem, "Griddy pictures and
no audio," here: http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?p=25788#post25788.
I posted a welcome and summarized our discussion. Please welcome and
offer any advice you can about sugababe's problem. Thanks!

VISTA
Enterprise is the ONLY version that does not have an upgrade. Ultimate is
an upgrade OPTION for XP Pro. The "standard" upgrade for XP Pro is the
Business. Rich has dual boot for Vista and still uses XP for his builds.

MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007
Office 2007 training
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/office2007/iworker/default.mspx

LINUX
Linux 2.1.4 coming out, better technical base. A visitor uses Linux for
Paltalk. Linux cd is great for RECOVERING files. (Lots more Linux
discussion, above my head, you gotta be there!)

GETTING RID OF THE FUZZIES
Check out Fred's KH post:\
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5976
He calls Dell and they of course ask for the service tag or S/N or whatever.
He unplugs all of his cables and TURNS THE LAPTOP UPSIDE DOWN.
He plugged the computer back together, and C'est Mirâcle, no more
fuzzies!
After all measures to repair fail, some will kick a CPU, whack a monitor.
But don't try anything so drastic with a laptop--just turn it upsidedown! .. ;)

Seriously, the video strap is probably cracked; and in turning it upsidedown,
probably just adjusted it enough to make the contact again. But don't think
it's fixed (if it is a hardware problem).

VIDEO CARD STABILITY TEST

HIJACKED MACHINES
Lawrence (Australia) has been striking hijacked machines lately one after
another.

CHECKING FOR SPYWARE
Spyware today is a bigger, more disabling problem than viruses.
Advice to visitor snowed_in:
- check out www.ewido.net and www.superantisyware.com.
- buy http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

NEOWARE THIN CLIENTS
A Thin Client can do anything, it just means that all processing is done
somewhere else. A Thin Client is a monitor/kb/mouse, boots from network,
all activity is done on server. Read this web page to learn more about Thin
Clients: http://www.neoware.com/thin-clients/index.html

PROXY DETECTION
The IP2Proxy™ Proxy Detection Web Service is a hosted, programmable
XML Web Service that allows instant detection of anonymous proxy by IP
address. The IP2Proxy™ Proxy Detection Web Service enables you to
check proxy servers for anonymity. http://www.fraudlabs.com/ip2proxy.aspx

DELL TECH SUPPORT
They discontinued business tech support - the home users still have to
understand India ..

Come join us next week, Wednesday night, 9 pm sharp. See ya,

Hi Lina,
In another thread, you asked for tips to make your presentation better.
I'd say you already do a fantastic job. Due to the way you format your
text with bold headings, use of blank lines to separate issues, short
paragraphs, proper use of white space, narrow blocks of text, all
contribute to a detailed post that is extremely easy on the eyes
and a pleasure to read. I can quickly scroll through your Wed Nite KH
posts and easilly locate the information. As far as I'm concerned, it's
parfect!

My advise... Keep up the good work!:first:

Thanks for the feedback, Pete. I needed that.

Your tutorial-in-progress .. ;) .. entitled, Effective Communications Via
Email Or Public Forums, provides some great guidelines. It can be
found at http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5963&highlight=concise.
I kept checking it as I wrote the summary.

I have a question and perhaps a tip which I will post in the thread above. In
the meantime, I try not to forget the three C's my Business English professor
drummed into us: everything you write, especially resumés, must be
Clear, Concise, Correct. That was in the 70's but still holds true today.

I'm open to any suggestions. My lack of technical expertise curtails my
ability to understand and summarize some chatroom discussions .... but that
should be an incentive for members to join us in the chatroom if possible!.. :)

Lina, I think you do a fine job of capturing the highlights of what goes
on at the Paltalk sessions. Think of your summary more like advertisement
than detailed minutes of a meeting and you will probably have more
fun writing your piece. No real need to get every detail. Just capture
the basic topics covered and leave some mystery to entice other
members to join us. Most of all have fun doing it. Your work is greatly
appreciated. Not many people could do the great job you do.

Thanks again, Pete. That's exactly what I wanted to know!

Time zones keep some of our overseas members from joining us, and I've
had them in mind with some of the summary details. But I guess I can
include just enough detail as well as web sites mentioned to whet their
curiosity. They can post and ask for more details or clarification.

I aim to please, so I hope members will feel free to aim any suggestions or
constructive criticisms my way! .. ;)

Good Evening all, I determined that the repeated virus alarms I was getting on paltalk was caused by popups, I haven't seen that problem previously.

The paltalk report is perfect Momma, and you are a doll!!!

As usual it was a pleasant afternoon!

I was so glad to make it even if I was an hour or so late, it was good to come in from working in the heat, and meeting the mob!

Cheers, Lawrence.
