On my son's pc, when I try to open any folder in Explorer I get the "windows has encountered an error and needs to close" message so I can't get into any folder on the drive but I can get to the net using IE and the net works fine, any ideas/fixes?

1 single drive? Chkdsk?
Can you get to Event Viewer?

1 drive, can't get into the control panel unless maybe via the Run function, will look for the run command for Event Viewer, in the meantime I will run the chkdsk and get back to you, thanks.

chkdsk does not solve the problem, what exactly am I looking for in Eventviewer?

If you can't open START... deeper problems.
At this point, I would (booting from XP disk to Repair Console)
Copy files in REPAIR FOLDER to System32/Config
Next would be Repair Install...

Yeah, the repair install fixed that problem, thanks!

nope, did not work after all, therefore I am guessing the olny thing left is a drive reformat?
