02/28/07 Wed Nite KH Computer Help Desk Chatroom Summary

Yawn! .. .. I'm still half-awake. Photolady and I closed our chatroom at
about 1:20 am. A visitor was still officially present, but probably asleep.
We tied for 3d, 4th, and 5th place throughout the night. Not bad for a
once-a-week chatroom!

I lost audio and had to reboot twice during the session, losing part of the
text box and some of the oral conversation. Time for me to update Paltalk
and for a reminder for all of us to make sure we are using the latest
version of PalTalk!

BRIEF OR DETAILED CHATROOM SUMMARY???

Last night Elliot mentioned that when he travels (a lot), he can't join us in
the chatroom. As far as details go, he'll take everything he can get! How
many of you prefer an in-depth summary or something like last week's?
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6102

We have discussed a shorter, less detailed chatroom summary here:
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?p=26005#post26005

Please let me know which you prefer!

COMPUTER-RELATED DISCUSSIONS

MONITOR POWER OPTION FAILURE

OPENING/CLOSING DOOR SOUND
Two days ago I began to hear the computer emitting opening/closing-door
sounds. (Reminds me of that old radio program, The Shadow Knows! .. ).
Last night Doug directed me on a tour of my computer. Could not pinpoint
what triggers the sounds. (Net Meeting requires manual access. Don't use
instant message programs. Removed every trace of AOL and its ISP offer
when computer was new.)

BTW, Rob. I did find conf.exe. It listed blip.wav, TestSnd.wav, neither of
which opened/closed a door.

Guru Doug advised: just listen for the next time it happens, ctrl-alt-del to
task manager, look at running programs, and make sure no program which
could be the culprit is running.

CHINESE COMPETITION
China has new processor, supposed to be good, will not run Windows at
all. Google Godson-2 (Lawrence).

China's Godson-2 CPU is a MIPS rip chip
Fab tech only two generations behind
By INQUIRER staff: Monday 25 July 2005, 11:16
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=24882
MARKET RESEARCH firm In-Stat said that the Godson-2 64 bit
microprocessor shows that Communist China is close to being a major
player in CPU design.

Thanks, Lawrence! That web site led me to another interesting one:

China to topple Silicon Valley, threaten Intel, AMD
Country in semiconductor equivalent of "long march"
By Mike Magee: Friday 07 March 2003, 08:01
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=8182
THE DEVELOPMENT OF semiconductor technology in Red China is a
"long march" that is set to topple Silicon Valley as the world's centre of
chip technology, a market research firm has said.

In a report called China's Fabless Firms race beyond Foundation Stage,
iSuppli said that there's been a migration of integrated circuit (IC)
engineers from California and from Taiwan, and that's letting China rapidly
ramp up its advanced process technology.

VISTA
Rich forced to learn Vista, has no choice.

Some Vista salespersons are worse than politicians and used-car salesmen
(But Elliot knows a nice used-car salesman).

Adam had problem getting a a nic card to work on Intel board on Vista.
Dan was summoned to the rescue. NETLOGON is MANUAL by default on
a BUSINESS class Vista. Adam is using the exact same 865PERL board
that Dan is, and Dan didn't have a bit of problem with the onboard nic.

Rob's old Visioneer scanner works in Vista using XP driver. Forced it.

Downgrading from Vista to XP not easy. Hardware if made for Vista may
not have XP drivers. Issues right now on a big forum with HP laptops that
cannot take XP.

GETTING MIC TO WORK ON VISTA DESKTOP
Visitor inspiration_14 has new desktop with Vista and can't get mic to
work; has sound. (Asked if she could remove Vista! .. :( ).

Rich instructed her go into Control panel, set for classic so you see all
icons, go to Sound&Audio, put a checkmark in box that says put icon in
tray for sound, double-click speaker in tray, then choose properties for
playback, and make sure microphone is checked; then do same for
recording. When you see microphone show up on panel, be certain it is not
muted. Find sound. Place volume icon in task bar......then Rich left to get
on a Vista box. Rich: Did you succeed in helping her get the mic to work?

LINUX
Elliot has CD, Doug may try Linux.

Visitor one_very_lost_soul explained that beryl is a 3D environment
for your X window session. He offered these three interesting urls (for
some reason I could not get the sound on the first two):

PHOTOLADY TO THE RESCUE!
Visitor AlexWebs's auto play feature of XP Pro laptop would not come
up when he inserted dvd, asked how to enable it. I couldn't follow it all, but
Photolady solved his problem! .. :hail:

OTHER DISCUSSIONS

DIRTY OLD MEN
No, not sexual predators, just slobs! We have unnamed members who
boast about leaving dirty dishes in the sink and dishwasher while their
wives are away for a period of time.....and they don't mind getting yelled
at when the lady of the house returns to a messy house and a kitchen
which makes Taco Bell and KFC look like an antiseptic hospital operating
room.

MEDICAL CARE
We talked about incompetent military and civilian medical specialists. Just
ask Doug, a paramedic, about taking his asthmatic son to an Emergency
Room. I don't think I'm paranoid about running AV and spyware scans; but
after my stint in the WACs and later as a military dependent, I definitely
am whenever one of my children is at the mercy of a medical professional!

Behave yourselves, and join us next week, same time, same place.

Good Afternoon All, good report Momma, yes those Chinese reports are kind of interesting, especially when you look at the dates on them!!

I strongly expect the Chinese olympic games to be a little more than showcasing sports!!

If you consider the outsourcing policies by the western world and the expertise transfer involved plus the receptivity to technical involvement, factor in a bit of Moores Law and then extrapolate the information obviously withheld, then I think we might expect a fair surprise!

By the way isn't it great to open a drawer and find clean knives and forks! (without having to wash them before reuse!)
Tell me, do women always swear when they push a broom around the house and especially so when they use a vacuum cleaner!!!

Of course if the place had been "spick and span" when she arrived home after a month away I would have been accused of having a live-in female for company, so there is some method in the madness!!! LOL!!

Thoroughly enjoyed the evening chat, seeing Elliot was there we had to restrict discussion to BlackMirror!! LOL!!

Enjoyed Rich's repeated "hows that now" discussion, maybe that Vista program isn't all as good as they are advertising!!! LOL!!!
The old saying "If it is so good, how come it doesn't work"! applies I feel!

I think it is reaching the stage here where if you buy Vista you get a free car!!! LOL!!

Who would be silly enough to have shares in MS!!!!

Thay Beryl program demonstrated from those URL's you mention is very interesting!!
I may have to D/L Ubuntu Linux and give it a try.

Cheers, qldit.

I'm with Elliot. I love your summaries. I am awed by what a wonderful job you do with them! I've been to the Wed. night chatroom and I know first hand how well you summarize the goings on. I, however, know how much more work it is to give the details. I suspect that most people would love to have the details. I want to hear your jokes as well! :-) So I think it is really up to you! I, like Elliot, will take what I can get. Thanks so very much for doing this!!! I'll 'see' you again (finally) this Wednesday night. YAY!!!

We'll welcome your return, Vivienne!

Poor Lawrence. He was struggling with possible malware on a computer,
his wife was away, and the dishes were accumulating the sink .. :puke:

The last straw: Vivienne was not there when he joined us in the chatroom.
How much can a guy take? .. :boink:

We're looking forward to hearing the next episode of our chatroom soap
opera, The Return of the LCD Monitor for Repair.

Vivienne, thanks for your imput about the summary. The score so far is
two for details.

LOL!!! How I missed the fun!

We're looking forward to hearing the next episode of our chatroom soap

It hasn't even gone yet. My daughter in law decided to wait for her sister to come up from Montreal and take it back with her. Her sister comes up today and returns tomorrow. And then Gawd only knows when *she'll* deliver it!! I never would have had the patience to wait this long.

Vivienne, thanks for your imput about the summary. The score so far is
two for details.

It will be interesting to hear from the others!

Well, I like the detailed version, rather than this shortened one.

And I meant to post the actual fix for AlexWeb's Autoplay problem, the day you posted this, but couldn't get back here to do so. So here it is below:

1. Open "My Computer" and right click your CD/DVD drive, then chose "Properties" at the bottom of the contextual menu.
2. Chose the Autoplay Tab.
3. Tick the button that says "Prompt me each time to chose an action", reboot/restart the computer.
Next time you insert a cd/dvd the prompt will come up.

Oh great and magestic Momma, I humbly request you throw whatever crumbs to us peasants as you might deem suitable at whatever time you think fit!

Don't let the dubious Rich fellow do it, his "how's that now"! repetition would probably be all consuming!

There is an excellent chance I may be at this weeks chat on time!!!!!!

Looking forward to it!!!!

Cheers, Lawrence.

Thanks so much, Photolady! I had to reboot twice and lost some of the
text box and oral conversation. Thanks for filling in the blanks! I'll make a
note of your step-by-step instructions for my own possible use .. :)
