Good Afternoon All, well one operating system produces a 3D desktop and the gates are open!

Kubuntu apparently produced the Beryl 3D Desktop on their distro and when I checked the latest Linux releases I found that 3D was the "in-thing"!

I downloaded the latest Vector Live Linux program with Beryl, and am quite awed.
And that is a live 700 meg system running from a CD!! Released as B4 a few days ago!

This morning I have just received another Live 3D distro based on Mandriva which contains another 3D desktop, this one is called Metisse.

So it appears there is a trend not only toward Live portable CD systems but also with a 3D element.

I am off to play with my new stuff here, certainly looks interesting!!

Cheers, qldit.

Odd, I thought (K)Ubuntu was going to ship Compiz, the other 3d desktop. Maby that was just Ubuntu, or I could be entirely wrong.

We've had 3d desktops in Linux for quite a while now, their all still beta but they're really stable anyway, nice to see some groups are shipping them as standard.

BTW. I don't think Metisse is actually 3d, just a very fancy 2d desktop

Good Evening Tortanick, This Mandriva Live CD is called "Mandriva One 2007".
I have been playing with it on several machines but it obviously requires a decent processor and video card to function, otherwise the Metisse 3D function appears to be inhibited.

I am not impressed with it's ability to detect and config my wireless cards or get online unless it has a direct ethernet connection and it doesn't like my onboard sound systems.

I haven't played with the newer Ubuntu series yet but I believe they are using Beryl.

I have just received the Open SuSe 10.2 Live DVD but once again I am not impressed with it's ability to use my wireless cards to get online or detect onboard sound systems or a creative Live value sound card.

So all up at this point, this latest Vector Linux Beryl release definitely looks the pick of the bunch, but I am still trying to bumble my way around in it.

I will try a few more machines with better video cards later before I place the media in the "unimpressed" box.

I don't feel that any of them have anywhere near the operational ease or speed of Puppy Linux.
But naturally Puppy has no 3D at this time.
Cheers, qldit.
