Good Morning Doug, interesting stuff, Red Hat has more or less been one of the industrial benchmarks, but for home computers was a little bit over complex and behind the progressive march of systems using all the latest designed "wigits".

Many of the textbooks are written for it, but the problem is that by the time they are printed and released they are virtually obsolete in many ways.

It usually came on six or more CDs and had an incredible selection of available programs on those disks, I quite liked the update idea where a subscription to them allowed online updating and help.

I do feel that the way things are going, as new different systems and new ideas are being more frequently released that an entire new version CD will overtake the online updating ideas, and it will simply mean obtaining a later version of an operating system with all it's later version programs that will load and retain all the favourites and odd files.

I found Red Hat and Fedora Cores Excellent, but slow and bulky, a bit like driving an underpowered Limousine.

Cheers, Lawrence.

Hello qldit,dbarrow...........everyone els......

Redhat was the first Linux distro I ever tryed I payed for it I went to best buy and bought Redhat7.2 and Mandrake 8.0...
I still read the Mandrake book and the Redhat book is good info on dule booting systems they break it down great... but thies OS's are gone now I would love to see a nice new Redhat.. I never tryed Fedora they are very slow even on a new computer.
but I tryed Puppy Linux qldit It dident work for me "Of Course Right" may be it was to advanced for my use I wasent happy with it I think the best way to use Puppy Linux is off the Live CD...
Iam addicted to Ubuntu it work's and I used notheing els but the Gnome its running great I used KDE all the time this is the only Linux distro I have used Gnome this much I dont even have Kubuntu installed or KDE their saying Xfce4 is realy light.
but Iam not doing any apt-get install-xubuntu because this will change ubuntu and I dont want this right now...............

.... In the end they post all the security flaw's just like what happened to me on Redhat damm why I do that......

come into my mind...................

Good Afternoon All, yes X86fun, they were both interesting distros, I think the first Red Hat I got was in a package from Red Hat for around $48 but I wasn't overly impressed with it, Mandrake at the time I thought was better, but everyone has their preferences.

I will make a point of getting the new Red Hat in the next few weeks and giving it a spin also.

It is a shame you had problems with Puppy Linux, you might join the Wednesday Evening 9PM US Eastern time on Paltalk and we might be able to work out what your problems might be with it.

For some odd reason I always preferred KDE to Gnome but I can't explain why.

I prefer using Puppy as the main system with Kanotix, or a Knoppix version as a second boot with a windows program as a third, but it rarely gets used.

The Fedora Cores all seem to be good functional systems but my skills are lacking to really use them properly.

I have never purchased the update ability apart from the short term free update that used to come with Red Hat initial installs.

Cheers, Lawrence.

Lawrence, are you aware that X86 fun joined us last Wednesday night as
visitor X86 echo, the cable guy with the sexy voice ? .. ;) .. (Rob Cohan
and Lawrence, you now have heavy competition!)......Lawrence, your Linux
expertise probably helped inspire X86 to join our KH forum during the
chatroom session! .. :hail:

X86, I look forward to your return visit to our chatroom . BTW, in case

Good Morning Momma, yes I actually was half aware of X86 being at the party but I wasn't entirely sure.
My apologies to you X86 if I sounded vague! (actually I am ten times worse in reality!)
I think his experience is probably greater than mine, he certainly has had some fun with it.
Notice I at least identified X86 as having an appendage!!! LOL!!!

It is amazing how many people are half inclined to give Linux a try and become hooked!!

There are a lot of people floating around using Linux (like myself) that like to compare notes on their experiences with that system and all it's off-shoots.
I suspect the Wednesday chat will include a lot more Linux discussion.

I just tried to get this latest Red Hat, but it is a little bit expensive for a trial run!!!
It appears they are well aware it is slotting into spaces left by organisations dropping Windows.

Cheers, Lawrence.

Good Morning All, yes tortanick that was a quite a popular post!! LOL!!

By the way X86, did you by any chance happen to experience the MBR lock in some of those early Mandake distros?

That really had me scratching my head, I had never experienced one previously!

I wonder why they stopped using that idea!

Have you ever struck it Tortanick?

Cheers, Lawrence.

Nope, I only started with Linux last year.

X86, I too have heard that Ubuntu dosn't really take much care of KDE, when RC2 is released I'll write a little guide on setting up Debian etch with KDE (poke me if I forget). I'm useing it now and it is a beutifull KDE desktop :)

Oh, its allready out, I'd better get to work...

RC2 IS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
