03/21/07 Wed Nite KH Computer Help Desk Chatroom Summary

We had a full house last night in our chatroom! We placed 3d in computer
chatrooms most of the evening. Visitors from U.K, Canada, Denmark,
and maybe more countries (I couldn't keep up!) joined us. And, of course,
our Australian guru Lawrence and the rest of us made them feel at home.

Discussion was still going strong at 12:45 AM, with seven of us still there.
We probably closed way past 1:00 AM (I had a senior moment and forgot
to note the time).

.

WHO WAS THERE

KH MEMBERS - Lina, Photolady, Matt (X86), Lawrence, Rich, Rob (kern),
Dan

VISITORS WHO CHIMED IN - snowgoose101, redlion1957, G H A Z i,
myhdissata, Leaf42, Coyote, The Rock_99, flyingeagle91, JoshS22, darren26_1,
Stormy_Knights, sajlinks, Geforce_7900GTX, keith_heaton, KLASSACT,
armadillo115nc, Spedsworld2000, VTech65549, Steve In Orient

REMEMBER THIS ABOUT PALTALK

* Be careful! Dan and Rob told us last night, they never accept anything from
other Paltalk members, period!--because you don't know who's on the other end
or what their motivations are! If you accept/send a PM or file transfer to or
from someone you don't know, you are simply asking for trouble! ..

*Use a different font size/color from other attendees. Note: X86 wanted to
know to which color he should change his fonts ... Lawrence suggested
white ! ..

COMPUTER DISCUSSIONS

UNSCRUPULOUS COMPUTER VENDOR
Rich trying to resuscitate computer sold to unfortunate lady -- bogus
operating system, crappy PC chips, ECS (Elite Computer Systems)
motherboard, Centron 2600 processor, all B.S. hardware -- such a disaster
that no need to take Lawrence's suggestion that he try Puppy Linux on it to
say it's crap--so bad, no test needed!

FINDING cplexe.exe
Visitor GHAZi (Denmark), has XP SP2, doesn't have Windows CD (sold
without it), needs to get Windows CD to get cplexe.exe, or he will have to
take it to shop (expensive!). I don't understand it all, but I Googled cplexe.exe
and found this at
http://www.hardwaregeeks.com/board/showthread.php?t=19673 :
Re: Cplexe.exe?

Hope this helps.

Attached Files
File Type: zip cplexe.zip (20.3 KB, 1225 views)

Here in the U.S., computer vendors don't have to give you the CD. GHAZi
could borrow one. If not, he could call M$ for tech support, but it probably
would be cheaper to buy the CD!

VISTA
Rich finally got his free Vista; Photolady is still waiting for hers. Many XP
drivers work in Vista. Dan hasn't had Vista "eat" any of his Office suites
(2000, XP, or 2003), and 2007 runs like a champ with Vista.

Dan: Man, is it going to be a bear when Vista gets flying!-- no more Start /
Settings / Control Panel..... LOL

LINUX
Matt likes Ubuntu, thinks Puppy Linux is like DSL (I guess he means fast?).
He's able to do more in Ubuntu. Visitor snowgoose101 didn't like Ubuntu.
Lawrence found it a bit slow; he usually doesn't do all that much though, so
Puppy suits him!!

.

WIFI
Visitor Snowgoose said if wireless card not compatible, try different brand.
4500 best even for Linux. He directed us some good net cards here:
Ralink RT2500 chipsets based wireless 802.11g devices
http://ralink.rapla.net/

Series 5000 are good routers. Rich put USR546l router with three clients;
now the best router he has ever used.. It threw a signal further than a
Linksys B router with big booster. 5461 has a usb print server also--piece
of cake to set up, too. Rob thinks print server makes things a whole lot
easier-- partly why he went with USR.

Rich: You need to use the same brand router and adapter.

Lawrence has a D-link modem that occasionally dies, but removing power
usually gets it working again.

Check out this KH thread, Wireless Woes, at
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6437

BACKDOOR INTRUSION
Visitor sajlinks thinks someone got into his machine via a backdoor. He
has AVG, McAfee, firewall.

Rich advised online scans by Ewido, and BitDefender. Lina added SAS
(SUPERAntispyware). Lawrence, of course, likes Avira .. LOL

Lawrence thought the intruder might be Vessor, with which he has hassled.
It operates through the Soulseek PtoP program and also through previous
viral infections; it is a nasty problem. More here:
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/vesser.shtml

Reminder: You should ONLY have ONE antivirus / firewall / security
utility EVER running--otherwise they are battling each other. More in
those is NOT better (per Dan).

Rob (kern) thinks it's amazing how many people claim to be 'expert
hackers' -- when 99% of the time their 'victim' lets them in!

DISCUSSION TOO DIFFICULT FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND, MUCH
LESS SUMMARIZE (which is why you should try to visit the chatroom!)

*CPanel
Here are the two web sites mentioned:
http://www.cpanel.net/ and http://www.xpanel.com/

*MAC
Dan stated: Can't change MAC address - MAC is assigned from NIC and
each one is unique.

NON-COMPUTER DISCUSSIONS

MAD COW DISEASE
Memory refresher. Originated in England. Here in the U.S. the government
will not allow cattlemen to voluntarily individually check each of their
cattle for Mad Cow Disease before sending them to market! (Only in
America!)

LINA'S KOREAN SOAP OPERA(S)

(for armadillo115nc--he asked in the text box when I was away from
computer)

Channel WYBE (PBS channel 24 here); one at 11:55 PM EST, another at
11:00 AM EST. They all eventually end happily, and then another soap
opera begins. I'm going to give up the 11:55 PM spot when that soap opera
ends-- interferes with our chatroom and with my ability to get up early in
the morning. .. :(

Until next week, take care .. :grouphug:
