One way to resolve your problem is to increase the overall screen
resolution. What is your display resolution now?

One other thing comes to mind but I'm not sure if it's an option in XP.
I know in the past there was a way to change the Programs Menu
such that all programs would be listed in a single column and you
could scroll vertically through a very long list of programs that were
too many to fit within the screen. Unfortunately, I can't recall how
to set that up and what version of Windows it was an option for.
Maybe it was Win ME?

Yes, I can relate. Due to my aging eyes, on a 17" monitor, I had to keep my
screen res set to 800x600. Then I got a 19" monitor and that enabled me to
increase the screen res to 1024 x 768. So consider getting a larger monitor
for an overall improved computer experience. Hey, it's cheaper than getting
laser eye surgery. :D ---pete---

BM,

Have you thought of grouping your applications by function?

For example, I have 8 different publishing apps - which are located under one folder in the Programs list of Publishing Apps (not very original but I know what it means). Under Office Suites folder I have Lotus Smart Suite, Office 2003, and WordPerfect. Under Web Utilities I have my Spybot, Adaware, JV16, etc, etc. This way I have approximately 10 or 11 programs that would have been listed in the Programs list separately grouped together so I am down to only three in the Programs List BUT each folder defines what the contents is.

We discussed building custom START menus before.
As Dan said, it is very easy to break down the contents of the START menu into more logical and easy to navigate sub-menus rather than one huge run-on PROGRAMS list.

You can make this GLOBAL by creating it in ALL USERS profile or individual for YOUR USER.

Figure out a menu structure that works for you, create the headers, drag the shortcuts to the programs into that new sub-menu.

While you are in there, spend some time cleaning out all the useless junk like the uninstall, readme, and other links you don't need.

You can easily tame PROGRAMS into half a column of specific group sub-menus that organize and make sense to you.
Break the sub-menu main header down into further groupings and sub-menus.

If you are referring to just the start menu programs, try right clicking taskbar,
hit properties, hit start menu, hit customize, hit small icons, hit ok and apply.
This will allow showing more items in the start menu.

Great! Hope you are the same.:)
My program items are in columns (only 2) so I really don't know how many columns XP will display.
Here's a little item I found:
Folders enforce order when icons run amok (http://www.chicagotribune.com/technology/columnists/chi-0610230164oct23,1,4227720.column)
Probably discussed above already but oh well.;)

Use of Quicklaunch menu in taskbar

Creating a Quicklaunch for most commonly used apps in your taskbar is another way to save some space and not have to go hunting for those things you use all the time.
It can include Weblinks that will open your browser to a specific URL.

Right click on the taskbar
Toolbars
New toolbar

Point this at a FOLDER you will create. I just stick mine in the %systemroot% folder.
Name the folder something short so it takes up little space, ie: NET.

COPY shortcuts to whatever you want into that folder and arrange in an order you like.

Go back to your taskbar.
SLIDE the NET to the right until it only shows the title:
NET with the little arrows >> next to it.

You now have a little popup menu that will open when you click the arrows.

You can cram a whole bunch of these into the taskbar.
Just keep the contents down so it is a single column high.

Ie: Daughter has one for her medical dictation programs that contains shortcuts to all the ones she opens on a regular basis.

It is possible to string some of these together so one shortcut will open several programs at once.

Folder navigation with Explorer

You see the direct shortcuts in my Start Menu to open a specific folder with Explorer and go directly to that section only, without having to navigate through from the top.

Create shortcut:
E:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n, /e, C:\Music

The shortcut says, open explorer.exe /navigate to C:\Music

E:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n, /e, C:\DOCUMENTS
goes directly to my document storage

E:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n, /e, \\CYCLOPS\M LIBRARY
goes to the music library on the network storage machine

E:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n, /e, G:\DOWNLOADS
opens the Downloads folder
