Hi everyone, I've got a problem, when I try to switch my PC off using the usual method it won't work. I click start, then switch off, then switch off again, and nothing. I try doing it a few times and then give up. When I try stanby it works no problem.
I would be grateful if anyone can give me some pointers in how to correct this.
Thanks, Ann:(

Have you installed any new programs lately or had any windows updates .. anything that you think might be related to your problem

There is a startup and shutdown troubleshooter included in help and support .. have a look there until someone can assist

Hi, Yes I have installed new programmes for my OU course. I am following your advise at the moment on help and support. I have been following the links of what to try and am getting nowhere. Thanks for your help, I am going to follow its ideas until I reach the end of the road with it or until some-one comes up with something else I can try.

It usually means there is a program running in the background that doesnt shut down properly

You can try Start run MSCONFIG and disable all the ticks from start up .. restart your pc and then see if it shuts down properly

Ann, look through this pretty extensive list of possible problems:
Windows XP Shutdown and Restart Problems (http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php)
Hope it helps.

Hi Guys, Well I've gone right through the help and support for shutdown and I've unticked all the ticks in the start menu in misconfig and I'm afraid nothing is working. The only way I can get the PC to close is by switching it off from the socket. I hope you all can come up with something else.

Here are some other suggestions:

1) Boot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 as soon as the computer starts. Will it shut down in Safe Mode?

2) Insert your XP cd, and close the XP setup screen if it appears. Now go to Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow and hit ok. This will run the System File Checker.

3) Go here (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm) and scroll down to #267. Double click on the file and save it to your desktop. Double click the file from the desktop to run it.

Hi, Yes I followed Seth's instructions about safe mode and going to kellys-korner. It worked a treat as I haven't been able to switch off for about 6 weeks and I had exhausted everything I could think of that could have helped.
When ever I have had a problem I have asked you guys for help and you have never let me down. I would just like to thank you all for your help as I am disabled and without my PC I don't know what I would do as its my lifeline.
Thank you,
Ann
