Are CD and DVD written from the center of the disc toward the edge?
Interesting question. I had to look it up...

So the CD Drive operates at a constant speed by adjusting
the RPMs as it moves the reader across the CD.
I'm pretty sure a Hard Drive operates different than a CD. The
Hard Drive operates at constant RPM and it just reads data faster
the farther the head goes towards the outer edge.

G'Day All, yes the hard drive begins reading from the outer periphery and the linear speed is naturally greatest in the outer areas, consequently reads are more accurate in those areas because of the better amplitude of magnetic strength sensed in the heads.
There is a program obtainable to actually graphically display this read drop-off as the heads approach the centre area which is quite different on different drives.
This is actually a reason in the argument for drive partitioning with the operating system in the outermost physical area.
I have set gaming machines with the operating system using this idea and the games loaded in the next closest partition and the kill rate was reported as noticably better.
One Russian programmer I met was adamant that for best and fastest operation this was the best idea, but there are a lot of pros and cons, especially in view of the size of some of the latest games!! LOL!!
I have never understood why CD's read from the centre outwards.
Interesting stuff.
Cheers, qldit.
