onlinezulu, thinkitover, JoshS22, Let Kermit Sing ....we let him sing,
until Simon--I mean Rich--bounced him .. :smash:

COMPUTER-RELATED DISCUSSIONS

* KH CHATROOM EMAIL REMINDERS
Apparently, no one received a reminder for Wednesday's session. We're
trying to set up a working KH email address for Rich to use, and we don't
have it down pat yet.

* HOW MUCH IS KH WORTH?
Tom's Hardware sold for $15-20 million. Doug thinks we have more
content than Tom's...maybe KH is worth the same .. ;)
Visitor Coyote thinks it's a matter of traffic = revenue = value.

* DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SATA DRIVES
Elliot wanted to know the difference between sata drive and sata-2 drive.
Sata is 1.5gbs, sata2 is 3.0gbs. Throughput..sata2 has higher figures.
Controller is not the same. The motherboard and sata controller have to
support it. Unsure, but you may be able to set sata 2 to sata 1.

* AD BLOCKERS
On some forums, the moderators are not allowed to use ad blockers (ads
produce income for the forum).

Firefox will not block Paltalk ads. Use AdMuncher or add
advertising.Paltalk.com to your Host File. I'm too chicken to mess
with Host File and installed AdMuncher.

* ROOTKITS
Spybot removed rootkit for Rich, but it came back. He knew he had
rootkit because WinPatrol kept alerting that home page was being stolen.
HijackThis will sometimes pull out rootkits.

* LEAVE ON OR TURN OFF COMPUTER?
Lawrence worried about fans if computer is left on 24/7. Rich turns it off
at night or if he goes out. Visitor myhdissata turns his off every month.
Armadillo turns it off every time he's finished with it. N3 leaves it on
Standby.

*SLEEPING MONITORS
Doug's comments: Switch on the video card is turned off by the system...
kills signal to monitor...monitor goes into standby because no signal. Can
be video driver, BIOS, monitor. Two machines work like a charm; one
maybe won't wake up now and then, one just won't work no matter what.
APIC power settings for motherboard have a lot to do with it and can be
a BIOS problem in the motherhboard.

Rich was amazed that with all the troubleshooting we all did trying to
resuscitate Lina's old CRT monitor, we never thought about monitor
power option getting stuck!

* VISTA
Rich solved delayed Vista boot by using AVAST instead of Nod32 or AVG.
Seems AVAST may be best for Vista for now.

None of the computers at visitor myhdissata's school have Vista as the
operating system....they use Windows Office 03. EDIT: Photolady advises:
I'm sure that was Server 03, not Office 03. Office 03 is Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

Visitor thinkitover wants to get rid of little white shortcut icon on his
Vista desktop icons. Photolady said tweakUI would remove them for
you in XP, but she doesn't know if that's available in Vista. Rich knows of
no solution for that yet; we are waiting for it.

*LINUX
New version of Linux PC Recovery Disc just came out; it has partitioning
and all sorts of stuff. Lawrence hasn't become on top of it yet but thinks
it's a very handy tool.

Linux answer to Apple Mac ads:
http://reverendted.wordpress.com/2007/03/19/mac-vs-pc-how-would-linux-fit/

Visitor Armadillo (a regular who won't join the forum) uses Linux, likes
Mempis. Hasn't tried Puppy, is more into installables. Lawrence likes
Puppy; it loads to drives very nicely.

* NVIDIA CARDS
Lawrence thinks NVIDIA are the cream cards in Australia currently. They
work best in Linux, and he thinks the manufacturers realized there was a
decent market for Linux.

Photolady doesn't think any of the newer NVIDIA cards have a TV tuner.
You need a separate card for that. She uses a Hauppauge WinTV 150 PVR.

* JAVA SCRIPT ERROR
This problem still not resolved in Lina's XP Home machine. Buttons on
military.com, Lycos mail boxes, and KH forum smilies don't work. Tried
reinstalling Java software, no go. Rob and Doug still pondering solution,
said not ready for XP Repair, wipe-and-load, or new computer. They are
still searching for answer. Could be a java script error in the coding on the
particular site. Java downloads are not the problem, something else got
wacked.

Would appreciate input and new theories. See KH post (long thread) here:
Java Script Problem http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6641&highlight=java

*CONVERTING VIDEO FILE
Annie has problem converting video file using ArcSoft. See this thread
at http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6689. Annie,
there are more suggestions there. Check it out.

OTHER SUBJECTS DISCUSSED

* DON'T MESS WITH PHOTOLADY .. :nono:
She used to go clamming and would be in the water on her hands and knees.
Stingrays would swim between her arms--never had one bother her. Guess
they knew who was boss!

* TAXES
Doug said we pay tax on taking a crap, the paper to wipe, the water to
flush, and the food that makes it...water tax, sewer tax, sales tax,
utilities tax...just sitting down costs money...oh yeah...tax on the light
bulb and fan in the bathroom, too.

Doug said they tax Viagra, the bed, sheets, and pillows. (Move to PA,
Doug....you'd save the tax on Viagra, all prescriptions, and over-the-counter
medications......no tax if you take a sleeping pill instead of Viagra .. ;) )

Many low-income PA citizens don't apply for income tax forgiveness
because of the complexity of the instructions. It may cost more to hire
a tax professional than just pay the tax. AARP has cut back free tax
preparation for low-income seniors--not enough volunteers. I delayed
creating this chatroom summary so I could finally tackle my PA State
Income Taxes. I paid PA nothing--but it would have been easier to just pay
the damn $9 than figure out tax forgiveness!

* WINNING THE LOTTERY
What we would do if we won, tragic consequences for some winners.
By not buying a daily $1 ticket, you can save $365 a year and buy a
new computer every three years!

* FOWL PLAY
A capon is a castrated rooster. (Did you know that?.....poor thing!)

N3 quipped, "Have you ever been incarcerated for the abduction of
domesticated fowl?" (We were discussing different ways to kill a chicken.)

Until next week, take care,

Lina

Nice summary again Lina. Just one thing though that myhdissata said. None of the computers at visitor myhdissata's school have Vista as the
operating system....they use Windows Office 03. I'm sure that was Server 03, not Office 03. Office 03 is Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

And I tried adding that information to my host file, and it didn't work Lina so when this trial version of Admuncher is up, I'm buying that. It is worth it to block those annoying Paltalk ads. ;)

Thanks, Photolady. I quoted your comment as an edit to the summary. I had
Office 03 in my written notes, but at times I have trouble time hearing
myhdissata--low volume, and he talks too fast for this old lady! But it
should have dawned on me that Office 03 is not an operating system. :doh:

Thanks again,

Lina

Java and java script are two completely different things. Hopefully if I find time I'll look at your topic, although it looks like people a lot better with PCs than myself already have. Good luck with it! :wave:

* NVIDIA CARDS
Lawrence thinks NVIDIA are the cream cards in Australia currently. They

Nvidia is looking like the better of the two major graphics companies (vs. ATI, bought by AMD). Nvidia has a much better driver and more support for Linux, which is always a plus. :) They crushed ATI in getting a DX10 board out first.

* ROOTKITS
Spybot removed rootkit for Rich, but it came back. He knew he had
rootkit because WinPatrol kept alerting that home page was being stolen.
HijackThis will sometimes pull out rootkits.
I wouldn't trust Spybot to remove a rootkit, if you have one. There are many different types of malware that can change the homepage, so it isn't necessarily a rootkit. Rootkits try to hide malicious running processes or data. Many types of malware today use rootkits to help conceal their presence.

* VISTA

Seems AVAST may be best for Vista for now.
Way back when I started beta testing Vista I believe Avast! was one of the only AV programs that supported Vista, so I used it too.

Unsure, but you may be able to set sata 2 to sata 1.
I believe this is possible. My SATA II drive has a jumper I can put in to limit it to SATA I's specs.

On Lina's javascript problem, I wondered why folks were telling her to download Sun Java. Because I too know Java and Javascript are two different things. Anyway, hope you get it settled Lina.

Some reading for you on the two:
Java from wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_(programming_language)

And Javascript also from wikipedia:

I definitely had a rootkit and spybot was not the only program I used as I used a sys internals and f-secure program as well...I could get clean even for a whole day and then back it came. Yes I cleaned out restore and prefetch (I never enable Windows Restore anyway).
And PI you are right as Avast was the first Av to be Vista ready.
