04/18/07 Wed Nite KH Computer Help Desk Chatroom Summary

We placed 4th in computer chatrooms last night and closed at 11:25 pm,
when Dan and Rich were done teasing me-- :boink: -- they said what ails my
computer can be resolved by a "reformat" and "wipe and load" by my son
(he comes to town this weekend).

I lost much of the text box when I had to reboot because of audio problems,
so this summary will not cover all topics discussed and may not list all
members and visitors attending. :sorry:

WHO WAS THERE

KH MEMBERS - Lina, Lawrence, photolady, Dan, Elliot, Pi, Rich, Annie,
Rob (kern), Robert The Blind Guy (back at last!), safarion (joined last
night!)

VISITORS - snowgoose101, darnfes, shock13_1, PatrickC, Coyote,
Hmoobteb2007, alberto459

EMAIL REMINDERS FOR OUR CHATROOM

We know, you got three of them! I thought Rich crossed me off his list or
KH had abandoned me; but, lo and behold, I also got three in my mailbox
this morning. Bear with us. We shall get it straightened out!

COMPUTER TOPICS DISCUSSED

*WHAT WAS IT THAT PI SOLVED?
While Dan snored (he maintains he was asleep), our young knight in shining
armor, Pi, came to the rescue to solve something that had everyone else
floored, even though he has yet to study the subject. No wonder--Pi passed
his last school exams with high marks again. Way to go!

Note to Pi- Would you please post the problem the visitor had and how
you solved it? l lost a lot of the text box when I had to reboot for an audio
problem. I don't have the visitor's name, but I do remember he was ecstatic
about solving it!

Dan said he couldn't help because, "while he was asleep," he was
configuring a replacement router to open up a couple of ports for web
interface, remote administration, and terminal services access to the
client's server and work station. (Down, boy! .. ;) .. We were already
impressed.)

*FAT32 PARTITIONS OR NTFS?
Visitor safarion (now a member), asked how to determine if you have
FAT32 partitions or NTFS. Open My Computer, right-click each partition
and choose Properties--that will tell you NTFS or FAT32.

Safarion said when he tried to start his laptop, black window said "NTLDR
is missing." How to fix it? Rich offered:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318728 (for NTLDR missing)

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm#b (scroll down to XP)

Rob and Dan also gave safarion some tips on doing an XP Repair.

*PROGRAM OR WEBSITE?
Visitor alberto downloaded a web site, Trade the News, and could not find
it in Add/Remove Programs or anywhere on computer. He did not realize
that it was not a "program." Solution: do a Google search for the title of the
web site. (BTW, interesting web site: http://www.tradethenews.com/)

*COMPUTER LOCK-UP
Robert has an HP computer which runs 15 minutes, and sound triggers lock
up.Tried cheap sound card, still locked up. Cleaned it out, including
removing heat sink fan.

Suggestions: run mem test, www.memtest.org. When system runs for a while
and then stops, could be mismatched RAM, even from same manufacturer.
Also make sure heat sink fan put back in with generous amount of adhesive.

*GATEWAY PROFILE 4X HELP!!!!!!!
Rich's post was discussed last night. More comment has been added to the
thread today: http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6786

OTHER TOPICS DISCUSSED

*U.S. NORTHEAST STORM
Poor Rob (kern) had 8" of water in his cellar, but he had no computers down
there. First time he was flooded; our sympathy.

That's all for now. Join us next week.

Ciao .. :grouphug:

This Email list is sooo annoying. I had a big problem when all the KH members
email addresses were revealed in the CC list. Apologies and promises were
made that it would not happen again. Then a few months later, it happened
again. I finally got fed up and requested that my Email address be removed
from the list. Now I'm back on the list again! This is the most unprofessional
thing about KH forums.

THIS EMAIL REMIDER LIST SHOULD BE DONE USING A MAIL LIST MANAGER!
Most good webhosting services offer a free mail list manager. A mail list
manager would allow the members to subscribe or unsubscribe at any
time. As it is now, the reputation and image of KH Forums has been
damaged due to the malfunctions of the current method used to send
the Email Reminders. If a mail list manager was used for this reminder list
you could possibly reverse the damage already done to KH's image.

This is the second time I'm making this suggestion.
