05/02/07 Wed Nite KH Computer Help Desk Chatroom Summary

Slow night for all computer chatrooms. A computer room had only one
person present. Pi thought that must be really exciting!:bolt:

It was so slow for a while, I was tempted to disable AdMuncher to see if I
could get some action if that pesky noisy ad popped up again. We closed at
11 pm.

WHO SHOWED UP
KH MEMBERS: Lina, Annie, Pi, Photolady, Rich, Rob (kern), Robert
("That Blind Guy"), N3

VISITORS: armadillo, Coyote

TECH/COMPUTER DISCUSSIONS

* WIRELESS KEYBOARDS AND MICE
Rich thinks they make no sense. Laser mice hold charge a lot longer.

Pi bought wireless keyboard for $10 on clearance, cheaper than a regular
keyboard, was a kit, has a PS2 adapter (didn't try it on USB port), he uses
NiMH batteries, can use it from his bed a few feet away without a problem,
also works fine on Linux and FreeBSD.

Armadillo found them problematic on Linux in the past, but perhaps driver
compatibility has improved since then.

* PROBLEM CONVERTING VIDEO FILE USING ARCSOFT
Annie never did get back to us on this post
http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?p=29603#post29603
but she said our suggestions worked and thanked us profusely.

* PROCESS EXPLORER
Pi want to know if anyone uses Process Explorer, wishes he could program
like that. His latest just makes a Bibiolgraph/Works cited page.

* USING VCR WITH NEW LCD TV
The fast-forward of Elliot's VCR doesn't work well with his new LCD TV.
Must be a signal problem But, even without a hi-definition box, he can see
the difference in TV reception quality.

* VERIZON DSL 3.0 ONE-YEAR COMMITMENT PRICE GOING UP
It's going up to a total of $33-something. I'm far from the CO, and I notice
slow-downs often. Could just be heavy internet usage. In June, I'm going
to try the 768 speed (price also went up) to see if I really notice any
difference. No penalty if I go back to 3.0.

* COMPUTER-RELATED CAREERS AND COLLEGE AID
Let's keep our fingers crossed and wish Pi luck in securing another
scholarship for which he just interviewed! He's not sure which career to
pursue. Thinking about Computer Engineering, likes the combination of
hardware and software.

OTHER DISCUSSIONS

* SPANISH LESSONS
Pi began to explain "String Theory"... :doh: ...which was like a foreign
language to me. Somehow the two of us began to type in Spanish....Man,
he's good!

Armadillo's wife is from Peru and has "Spanish lessons" every day .. ;)
He had us in stitches with this tale:

Once, in a restaurant, wife and I were having a friendly argument. When
she realized I was right, she starting telling me basta (that's enough)
because she didn't want me to keep teasing her. Workers in the restaurant
called the manager. They said she was calling me a bast@rd! roflmao

Hasta la semana próxima....until next week, ciao .. :grouphug:

Well, seems I didn't miss much Lina. After I realized I wasn't there anymore, I rebooted computer only to find I'd lost connection here because of the storms, then the electric went off, my battery backup (APC UPS) was making beeping noises, found out later the battery is dead, so I just unplugged everything and stayed shut down even after electric came back on.

Maybe next week.

I have to tell that to my spanish teacher.

Thanks for the summary. :)
