Wednesday Night Paltalk Chatroom?

Well the last few weeks attendance have us wondering once again if we really need to do this. It's a shame as it is the one thing that makes this forum unique from all others, but it is just senseless to sit there for 2 hours while people we see on the forum posting, never bother to come in to say hello, and while folks find other things to do other than talk about computers.

Maybe you don't want to talk about computers? Maybe the problems you encounter aren't important enough to jump in and have solved immediately and writing about them for days is really what folks prefer?
Please let us know what you think. We will begin shutting down within an hour if few show up so you know and if things don't change drastically, we will shut first for the summer and then finally for good!

Please if you are going to suggest another night, do so because you really want to attend, because asking volunteers to sit there another night, is really inconsiderate and so much of that has occurred in the past.

Again please we are all ears, let us know what you think!

I actually look forward to this every week and surely not now but in the future is it possible to have it as a regular paltalk qna room.

For me Pal Talk is a very annoying application is my only gripe but the people on there are generally better than yahoo or others.

But, in order to do that, it would be necessary for someone over there to join us a few times to get the general hang of it all which isn't hard.
The room is there, it's just a matter of an Admin opening it.
It would be nice for you folks over there to get together in the same manner we do and get to know one another.

As for determining the day and hours to have the Paltalk session,
to me it makes most sense to offer several options and post it
here on KH as a voting type post. If you can't get enough people to
even vote on a block of time to have the Paltalk session then it
would probably be best to forget the whole idea.

However, before you forget the whole idea, I've said this before,
but I'll repeat it again. The Paltak session needs some kind of
organized effort to present specific info at given time that you
could use to promote the session in a unique fashion each week.
As it is now the same old message is sent out, inviting people
to come. If that message was unique each week people will be
more inclined to read it. Then if they d read it and find something
new or interesting that will be going on that day, they'd be
motivated to show up. Unfortunately, this approach requires
some extra work and planning. Hey, nothing good comes easy.:)

Good points Pete, I used to try to change at least the top paragraph. Then I was talked into a borax version that would be the same all the time...perhaps because of details that mean nothing like the version of paltalk and other things that neither populate the room or entice anyone to show up.

Hey, I volunteered before to go open it earlier and have it open for our brit friends. My offer still stands for next week, but after that, I'll be out of town at work and won't get home before 6pm.

One more thing. At ***, you can't add a link in your signatures to our paltalk. Against rules. :D

The room admins basically open and close the room and handle the occasional "loser" who comes in and tries to run loud music, or swear and monitor the room. The Admins just need to see how to bounce trouble makers...red dot and remove users who get stuck in mic mode so no one else can talk etc... next week Photolady will do it for you so you can come on and learn how to do that from here, then take over after that and it would really only take one of you at a time to handle it....so you can choose on and off weeks. maybe Lawrence can help out, we have to see where his time fits in for the brits as what we are trying to do is get you guys in on this and run it earlier so you can build your own group from GB.

I'm not sure either. Your Automatic Thread Subscription Mode of 'Instant Email Notification' should send an email when there is a new post.

It does not seem like an email address problem, since you received the PM notification.

In your User CP, is this thread shown in your List Subscriptions?

There may be an inconsistency in the forum database. In Thread Tools, you should have 'Subscribe to the thread'. Since you have the unsubscribe message, it appears like vBulletin thinks that you are subscribed.

Try clicking to 'Unsubscribe to this thread' in Thread Tools. See what is in Thread Tools and your subscription list. It Thread Tools shows 'Subscribe to this thread' (and there is nothing added to your subscription list), click it and see what happens.

One way to eliminate the suspense is to look at your List Subscriptions in the User CP. BTW you observed that this thread was not in there when you initially checked, were there any threads there?

Another way is to see if you get an email from this reply. :)

Well, I was there. Went in at 12:30 my time, left at 3:10pm again my time. It was fun. Helped a new guy who's now a new member at Kickenhardware; user name whothis1. Another from the UK.

I picked on BM as much as I deemed necessary. :D

And Davenext showed up and wanted to post his url for his computer tech help site. I vetoed that idea and after a bit he finally left. This is the same guy that kept wanting us to make him an admin on our paltalk. :rolleyes: Stupid git!!

We encourage you guys and gals "over there" to keep it up and make the chatroom a weekly experience! After all, that's what it is there for and now you can enjoy it as much as we have.

The reason to have an @admin present is, as you have now discovered, the weird, wacky, and insane are ever present and will be an unavoidable consequence.
Now you see why we have races to see who can bounce them first!
We are never overbearing with admin duties but quick to boot out the trash before they become an annoyance.
Training for Admin consists of learning how to use that menu and acquiring a quick trigger finger!

Photolady was right on the ball. I was there for a very short time and also
recognized Davenext as the persistent would-be adm and mod. I had
mentioned his name and antics in three different chatroom summaries. It
looks like he prowls night and day! .. :spider:

Remember to be careful about receiving files during the chatroom
session from people you don't know well enough to trust implicitly!

And be careful about clicking on urls that are offered from visitors you
don't know.

There's a difference between a mod and an adm in the chatroom. You can be
one or both. It takes an adm to open and close the room and to bounce trouble-
makers. A KH mod, on the other hand, needs to have a lot of computer savvy.
Photolady qualifies as both .. :hail: .. I only qualify as an adm .. ;)

Well.......there may be a problem with my opening the room tomorrow. I have my GM coming to fund me some money to get my truck road ready for the trips to Austin five days a week, I think he'll be here in the morning. And if he does come, I'll have to take the truck in and have brake pads installed. Don't know how long that will take or when it will happen. If I'm here at 12:30, I'll open the room. If not, guess Rob can hold the fort eh?

Yes you need to talk to be able to Admin.....T we can buy them here for under $10. They come free with most pc's as well.

btw, just to let you all know, for the time being anyway, I have Wednesdays free to do as I please......at least until I find another job. I have put in my two week notice with the company I work for because after driving down there this past Monday, I realized I cannot drive down there. I don't do heavy big city traffic and had an anxiety attack while driving this roadway. My boss sent me home at 3pm on Monday because he realized I was still shook up from the drive down. His suggestion later was to put in my two week. Actually, it's a bit more than two weeks so I get another pay check before terminating employment with them, plus an extra check for vacation time I didn't take.

So, I'm free on Wednesdays til I find other work.

Good luck, Photolady. If I were still able to drive, I know I'd end up with a
panic attack. As someone said during our chatroom session, being a good
driver is not enough today. You have to have extra-sharp reflexes to avoid
accidents by the speeders, nonattentive drivers, and the idiots who are allowed
to drive or walk in traffic! .. :eek:

With your computer expertise, common sense, and integrity, you will find
better employment and times ahead. :)

You know we need a Mod to at least continue this as we have been lucky with 3 of us around during the day. To be a Mod we need someone, at least one of you to be able to run the room, chase scum and that person needs a microphone. Let's solve that one before we worry about name changes, OK?
Otherwise we can call it the "Silent" KH Paltalk Chatroom. You all should realize also that while typing is ok, it get's really old after 4 hours and it is also much harder to follow if you have 7 people all typing at once. It aint called "PalTALK" for nothing you know! The silent nature of this room, will never bring in Paltalkers which we need to boost the traffic also.

Theres nothing wrong with text chatting -everyone can text chat as much as they like. We will drop in from time to time as our schedules permit, but in order to keep the room going one of you needs a mic and be willing to mod. Otherwise, as Rich said, Paltalkers who drop in the 'silent KH room' will quickly exit.

I am willing to try anything...if someone can open it fine but where I am disappointed is that no one wants to be an admin on your side or has microphones whgich is a $9 investment and that leads me to believe we will ultimately fail in this idea.

And my net is operational again. Wireless techs fixed it in under 30 minutes. Wasn't my radio afterall, just router needed resetting. Even though I tried doing this myself, it didn't work. And the network manager said it was my radio, the wireless techs said he didn't know what he was talking about. ;) So, I can open the room on Wednesday if all you UK'ers want me to do so, please say so here.
