W2K, SP-4.
Everytime I start this thing, it asks for the user's password. The box comes up with the user's name and blank box for you to enter the password.
I turned off Client for MS Networks.

Thanks - that's the problem, this machine was once part of a domain. Unable to do step 2:Click to clear the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer check box.
because that check box doesn't show up,
I hope you find the solution.
Despite my efforts, I just politely told the user to "live with it".

You can divorce a computer from a domain by setting the network to workgroup settings.
THE PROBLEM IS you will lose the profile UNLESS you move everything to a local profile before you divorce the domain to workgroup setting.
Once you have done that go to regedit, edit, find < autologin>. Find the username and change the dword from 0 (zero) to 1.
Then it will automatically login to that user each time without prompting for password.
This also works if you are on a domain. I setup all my point of sale systems to autologin and lauch the point of sale software.

OMG whatever you do do not change a domain to workgroup without establishing another user or local profile or you cannot boot. I made that disastrous mistake one time in XP, never again!!!

I ended up going to My Computer / Network Identification and telling it this computer is not part of a domain. Very happy with the result.
Sweet. I'll keep that in mind.
