Unknown PCI Device

I have an old Dell Optiplex GX150 that I'm building. It's running Windows 2000. I have everything installed except for one PCI Device that comes up in Device Manager as 'yellow'.

I haven't been able to determine what this is. The only PCI card in the machine is a modem which shows up OK. Other than that, everything seems to be fine.

Any idea as to what this PCI Device may be?

Tony,

The Dell Drivers and Downloads link for that machine is listed below...

Re: Unknown PCI Device

Thanks Cindy. I've already been there. Had to load drivers for the graphics and sound. At this point I have only that one PCI device and I don't know what it is. I guess I could download all of the drivers listed and install them all one-by-one, but that's a lot.

I'm wondering if the unknown PCI device may be the fax portion of the modem. The modem is a sf-1156i r2f which is supposed to have fax capability. I don't see a fax in the Control Panel. Time to fire that machine back up and have another look.

Re: Unknown PCI Device

I removed the PCI modem and I'm still seeing Unknown PCI device. There are no PCI cards in this machine right now.

Re: Unknown PCI Device

Hi Tony,

I have a Dell with a PCI modem/fax. It has always required two drivers, one for the modem and the other for fax capability.

Without both being installed it shows a yellow bang under unknown PCI device. I don't know whether this is yet another Dell

idiosyncrasy or not but removing the PCI modem and rebooting did not solve the problem. What did take care of it was first

removing the modem then a reformat and clean install.

The only other issue I have come across (Google) relating to the Optiplex with Win 2000 is possibly if the machine came

equipped with an nVidia TNT2 M64 PCI video card. (A setting in the bios needs to be changed...)

Hi Cindy - I pulled the modem and still saw Unknown PCI device in Dev Mgr. So I don't think it has anything to do with the fax/modem. I previously thought that was the culprit. This machine does have a separate card for video memory. It's on a slot that I'm not familiar with. Hooks at both ends. Had to do a Google search to find out what it was. Can this be a fly in the ointment?

Re: Unknown PCI Device

Hi Tony,

That slot would be the video card, whether it's the problem or not......This is probably a long shot.

Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Quote:

In the Control Panel window, double-click the System icon.

In the System Properties window, Click the Hardware tab.

Click the Device Manager button.

In the Device Manager window, click the plus (+) sign beside Display adapters.

Double-click Intel Corporation 810 Graphics Controller Hub.

In the Intel Corporation 810 Graphics Controller Hub Properties window, click the Driver tab.

Click the Uninstall button.

In the Confirm Device Removal window, click OK.

In the System Settings Change window, click Yes.

When the Dell logo screen appears with F2=Setup in the upper right hand corner, press the <F2> key.

In the system''s BIOS screen, use the <Down Arrow> key to cycle through the various choices until Integrated Devices is highlighted.

Press the <Enter> key.

In the pop-up window, use the <Down Arrow> key to cycle through the various choices until Primary Video Controller is highlighted.

Press the <+> key on the keyboard to set the option for Primary Video Controller to Auto.

Press the <Esc> key.

Press the <Alt> + <B> keys at the same time to reboot.

Once the screen goes black, turn the power to the system off.

Unplug the monitor''s signal cable from the back of the system and plug it into the video port on the video card.

Power the system on.

It will boot to Windows 2000 normally.

Re: Unknown PCI Device

I'm going offer my advice to this too. I had a similar problem with an older computer this week. Turns out the extra PCI device was coming from not installing the Chipset drivers for the motherboard. And this isn't the first time I've run into this problem. Soon as I installed the chipset drivers, the Unknown PCI device problem disappeared.

Tony, try this and see if your problem disappears:

Dell Optiplex GX150 Chipset driver
