    Windows 7 and Paperport

John - I moved this discussion to a new thread in the Windows 7 forum - Terry

This really frosts me. I know I ask for the trouble, but here we go again. I changed the advanced power settings as Dee suggested and all was well until now. I upgraded Paperport 11 to version 12 just a few days ago. Now the pc won't sleep when I adjust the power settings. The monitor goes off (sleeps) but the pc won't sleep unless I depress the keyboard's sleep setting. How weird is this? I have switched off all Paperport startup programs and any other unnecessary programs and still have this issue. I'm almost ready to remove Paperport or restore a True Image backup but want to give this time and try some troubleshooting. Maybe I'll search on Windows 7 sleep issues.

    Re: Possible Power Saver Issue

Oh here we are again with Paperport...I tuned out on Paperport 8, I had had enough. The thing I don't understand is you have Acrobat, and you can use that as a scanning platform and it will do almost everything that Paperport does, without screwing up your entire computer.

    Re: Possible Power Saver Issue

I agree with much of your comment, Rich but Paperport does allow for some quick editing of documents and it's easier to use than the advanced nature of Adobe. I'm going to remove Paperport 12 to see if it resolves the issue. Paperport 12 is supposed to be fully compatible with Windows 7 so I don't really understand this issue. However, I do agree with you Rich - Paperport and Scansoft stuff sure is a problem.

    Re: Possible Power Saver Issue

I haven't used Paperport since version 9 and I'm with Rich - why use an application that has been nothing but problems to you when Adobe Standard or Adobe Professional do the same and even more!

I just had an application pdf file emailed to me - went into Adobe Standard and filled it out and sent it back to the bank. Yea, took me a little longer to enter the text but then I don't use Adobe everyday, once a week, or even once a month - maybe twice or three times a year I have to fire it up but it doesn't take but a few minutes to get going and not have to bother with the operating system nightmares of Paperport.

You know what John - you just had a thought come to mind:

    Re: Possible Power Saver Issue

Hey, my bad. At least I can admit I make mistakes. I should have done my homework on Paperport 12. I received an offer to upgrade Paperport 11 to Paperport 12 for $29.95. What a bargain! (Not). It turns out Paperport 12 is compatible with Windows 7 but only the 32 Bit version. Paperport 11 is compatible with Windows XP & Vista 64 Bit. I plan on removing Paperport 12 and want to see if the pc sleeps properly again. I was running Paperport 11 on Windows 7 64 Bit without issue so I suspect it will be ok to put it back on the pc after I use the removal tool for Paperport 12. I use Paperport 10 at work and find it useful in addition to having Adobe Acrobat. In fact, I have found Paperport useful in performing quick edits to pdf files and manipulating an image or form. Different strokes folks. But then again. I forgot that some of us are perfect.

Well NOW you've left the cat out of the bag !

I'm not down playing PaperPort - it was my main staple for years. Scanning in documents, entering text, and converting them over to PDF files. I just figured that if I have one product that supported everything I wanted to do I didn't need to load several packages.

Many of the multi-function units use to use a branded version of PaperPort for their scanning/converting pdf files, but even they have dropped the PaperPort "lite" package they were using for a branded Adobe interface. And when that happened I made the switch too since there was no longer a reason to support what wasn't provided (that is the down part of technical support - you can't be the answer to everyone and you have to be the answer to the majority).

    Re: Windows 7 and Paperport

I just got tired of all the issues and one year I ended any association with anything Roxio makes and anything Scansoft makes. Since I can remember Roxio requires a full time person to update it all the time, and after each update something stops working and two other things screw with some other program on system. Paperport does exactly the same thing and as far back as I can remember always has. I agree it's a pain to use Acrobat to fill in a form, but at least other programs and features continue to work when you install it. I cannot ever remember Acrobat interfering with anything or causing any errors since 4.0 which is where I started.

    Re: Windows 7 and Paperport

Hey, I kind of agree with both of you but find Paperport useful for certain instances. I should have known better. Let the buyer beware applies here. I have to blame good old ScanSoft for some of the issue. They sent me a special offer to buy the upgrade to Paperport 12 for $29.99. The offer was only good for a few days. The upgrade is normally $99 so I thought this was a deal. I think they are also a little deceptive. They advertise Paperport 12 is compatible with Windows 7 but don't say it isn't compatible with the 64 Bit version! I almost flipped when I reviewed their Knowledge Base and found only Paperport 10 and 11 are compatible with XP and Vista 64 Bit. I should have just stayed with Paperport 11. I'm discovering that if software will fuction on Vista 64 Bit is likely will have no issue on Windows 7 64 Bit.
I could very well have hidden this blunder from this board and the members. I believe in being open even if I have to take some lumps for it. I am used to the criticism and consider much of it as good natured ribbing. In the end, I've learned another lesson (the hard way again!)

    Re: Windows 7 and Paperport

I just removed Paperport 12, restarted the pc, and reset the power settings so the monitor and pc sleep after 1 minute as a test. The pc went to sleep without issue. Paperport 12 was definitely the culprit. Another lesson learned. Actually, Paperport 11 worked fine with Windows 7 (64 Bit) and Paperport 12 wasn't significantly different.
